Social media has been a buzz since City Council announced plans to move forward with public consultation on potential locations for the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice House.
The project proposes a 10-bed hospice for the region being spearheaded by the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society.
The proposed location is at the Mount Baker RV Campground with four alternate location options such as the Frost lands near St. Mary’s School, in the Highlands area, in the Slaterville area on 5th Street NW or the south area of the Kinsmen Quad Ball Park off Willowbrook Drive.
Community Reaction
Facebook community groups have seen a surge of discussion about the proposed location. Some residents have raised concerns about using the Mount Baker RV Campground, noting that it serves as a more affordable option for both visitors and residents.
Tom Shyptika, who is running for mayor of Cranbrook, said on social media that the consultation process could delay a decision until after the upcoming council elections in October.
“The RV Club has worked hard for two years in good faith and has done a tremendous job. I witnessed this personally on a recent tour,” said Shyptika in a social media post.
“The Cranbrook/Kimberley Hospice Society has also assembled a dedicated team of citizens, bringing together expertise, compassion, and energy, along with over $1 million in funding. This effort has been ongoing for years.
“Now, at the end of an election cycle, all of this will be deferred to the next Mayor and Council. I sincerely hope the next Mayor and Council will lay all the cards on the table for the public to digest.”
To help the community understand the history behind the proposed Hospice House by the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society, The City of Cranbrook has created an information rich webpage at www.cranbrook.ca/hospice.
As part of the upcoming 2027 Budget Citizen Survey set to run September 8 to October 2, residents will be asked if they support having the Hospice House located potentially at the Mount Baker RV Campground property as requested by the Hospice Society or located in one of four other potential locations.
Results will be presented to the incoming Council in November 2026.
