Sparwood has now unanimously named an acting mayor in the wake of Mayor David Wilks’ resignation.
Councillor Amy Cardozo announced the change on social media Wednesday (Apr. 22).
She has served the district for seven and a half years– most notably, as the only woman and youngest member of Council during her first term.
“I wasn’t sure that I would be taken seriously or that my opinion would even matter,” said Cardozo.
“[Wilks] created a safe space for me to learn, grow and build confidence in my role. I have some big shoes to fill and I can only hope that I will have the opportunity to help others grow in this role in the future when I run for Mayor in the fall.”
Wilks served as Sparwood mayor for a non-consecutive 14 years before his last Council meeting this week, on April 21.
He would be moving to Lethbridge, Alberta, with his wife in May.
