The mayor of Sparwood has now announced his resignation after securing a cross-province move with his wife this upcoming month.
At a council meeting on Tuesday, April 7, Mayor David Wilks said both he and his spouse had been eyeing a 55+ condo in Lethbridge, Alberta, and were able to find one “a couple months ago”.
However, that purchase came with a trade-off.
The deal came subject to the sale of Wilks’ house, which was sold within three days.
“It didn’t take long,” he told Council. “The Community Charter and Local Government Act are very clear. If you do not have a residential address in the province to which you govern, you cannot govern. It’s very clear on that.”
His resignation will be effective as of May 1, 2026.
The pair will be moving to Alberta on May 11.
Wilks was first elected to office between 2005 and 2011, then again from October 2018 to 2026.
He also served as an MP for Kootenay-Columbia in between the two stints.
The outgoing mayor said he will have more information at the next council meeting on April 21.
