Elkford residents may have to turn to officials for water after a pump failure caused a system-wide service disruption across the district.
The District first announced the issue before 9 p.m. Tuesday, saying the mechanical failure reduced the available water supply.
As of 10:15 a.m. today (June 17), a boil water advisory remains in effect for parts of the district, with another section possibly experiencing reduced water pressure.
The District explained that the affected system was built with two wells and two pumps that run in sequence or operate independently under normal conditions, but earlier this year, the larger of the two pumps could not be repaired, and the replacement pump has not yet been delivered.
The motor on that pump then failed. Crews were unable to repair the damage locally and had to take it to Calgary for repair.
“District staff have been working hard to respond to this disruption and support affected residents,” said Mayor Steve Fairbairn. “We
know this has had a real impact on people, and we appreciate the patience, cooperation and neighbourly support shown across the
community while this work continues.”
Residents can fill buckets for non-potable use from a water truck driving through the affected area, from a water station at the Community Conference Centre, or in front of the Elkford Fire Hall by 11 a.m.
Bottled water is being arranged for distribution, and public showers are available at the Aquatic Centre.
Affected properties are urged to shut off hot water tanks immediately.
The boil water advisory may remain in place for several days as the District completes flushing, chlorination and quality testing.
The District does not expect the motor to be ready for reinstallation before June 18.
Updates will be provided as they become available through the District’s website.
