David Eby says he has offered his resignation as the leader of British Columbia’s NDP after his decision to call a snap provincial election backfired and the B.C. Conservatives led by Lorne Doerkson won a majority government.
The outgoing premier says he called Doerkson to concede and offer his congratulations.
He says in a speech to supporters that the people of B.C. had asked the NDP to be the Opposition.
Eby says the loss of the election broke his heart and he accepted “full responsibly for that outcome.”
Saturday’s snap election backfired spectacularly on Eby, and it took a little over an hour after polls closed at 8 p.m. for The Canadian Press decision desk to call the race, underscoring the stunning nature of Doerkson’s win.
Doerkson is set to become premier just five weeks after assuming the interim leadership of a party that was in disarray.
But he convinced legislators who quit the Conservatives under the divisive leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay to return and has now led the party to victory.
