The Elk Valley Thrift Shop has donated $10,000 to East Kootenay Foundation for Health‘s (EKFH) upcoming Starlite Campaign, which aims to raise $1 million over the holiday season for a new mammography system at East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
The donation came from proceeds at the volunteer-operated thrift shop in Sparwood.
According to EKFH, the new system uses advanced 3D imaging technology that can detect more cancers earlier, provide quicker results and offer a more comfortable screening experience.
EKFH estimates about one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lives. It also estimates 300 men in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026 and 60 will die from the disease.
The foundation says support from organizations across the East Kootenay, including the Elk Valley Thrift Shop Society, will help bring the new system to the hospital and improve patients’ chances of living longer, healthier lives.
“We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Elk Valley Thrift Shop Society. The dedication, hard work, and passion demonstrated by their team are truly extraordinary,” said Brenna Hong, Executive Director, EKFH.
“Their generosity and commitment to helping others make a meaningful difference every single day, and we are so proud to work alongside an organization that embodies the true spirit of community.”
The thrift shop is a volunteer-operated second-hand store in Sparwood’s Town Centre. The non-profit society has donated more than $95,000 to community charities this year.
