Cranbrook’s incoming mayor and council will begin preparing to govern following the 2026 municipal election.
Starting Monday (Oct. 26), council members will take part in a mandatory, week-long orientation covering their roles, responsibilities and duties, as well as the work of each city department.
Sessions will include governance, parliamentary procedure, planning, public hearings, municipal finance, boards and committees.
Council members will also visit Cranbrook neighbourhoods to review sites expected to come before them during their term. They are set to take the oath of office next week.
“I am very excited to meet the team, and to begin the important work of learning and working together,” says Mayor-elect Tom Shypitka.
“For anyone that has not been involved in governance before, the learning curve is steep. Together, we will grow to best serve the residents of Cranbrook.”
The new council’s inaugural regular meeting is set for Nov. 2.
