Cranbrook’s all-candidates forum was held Monday night (Sept. 28) at Key City Theatre, where mayoral and council candidates answered questions.
JCI Kootenay hosted the event, which included a candidate meet-and-greet and allowed attendees to submit questions anonymously.
Mayoral candidates Lynette Wray and Tom Shypitka attended.
They were asked how they would lead a largely inexperienced council and address city beautification, small-industry development, homelessness, rundown properties and bylaw enforcement, climate change, and the growing deer population.
A question about the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society focused on concerns over locating the hospice house at the Mount Baker RV Campground. The City has provided four alternate options for location which includes the Frost lands property near St. Mary’s School, the Highlands area, the Slaterville area on 5th Street NW, and the south area of Kinsmen Quad Ball Park off Willowbrook Drive.
Wray said residents’ feedback is important and that she would wait for the Budget Citizen Survey results before committing to a plan.

Shypitka said protecting the heritage property is essential and that he prefers the Highlands site. He said the property would remain an RV campground until he had more information.

Council candidates answered questions next. The candidates are Al Dych, Robin Goldsbury, Roth Hall, Chris Maglio, Joe McGowan, Ron Miles, Bruce Murdoch, Shaun Penner, Wayne Price, Denis Senecal, and Jeremy Youngward. Maglio did not attend.

Council candidates discussed attracting small industries, green spaces, arts and culture, and property taxes.
Voters will go to the polls for the Cranbrook 2026 General Local Election on October 17.
