Cranbrook’s comeback fell short tonight (Sept. 19) in Salmon Arm, where the Bucks lost 4-2 to the Silverbacks.
The Bucks fell behind 4-0 before finding their offence and tightening defensively, but their late push could not erase the deficit.
Cranbrook made a few minor adjustments to its forward lines after Friday’s season opener as the coaching staff sought to build early-season chemistry.
Jared Rothman opened the scoring for the Silverbacks on an early first-period power play. Ethan Facchina then beat the Bucks’ netminder to extend the lead to 2-0.
The third period began similarly: Cole Longacre earned the Silverbacks an early power play goal, and Chase Campbell scored to make it 4-0.
The momentum shifted to the Bucks at 14:55 of the second period when forward Ty Ross put Cranbrook on the board, assisted by Luc Trevors and Matthew Gilmore.
The Bucks tightened defensively in the third period, and forward James Larson, with an assist from Brayden Gourley scored to cut the deficit to two.
The Silverbacks were held scoreless over the final 36 minutes, while Cranbrook scored twice.
Cranbrook rookie goaltender Jakub Hajek entered at 3:59 of the second period and stopped all 19 shots he faced, earning the game’s third star.
Bucks goaltender Keegan Carswell stopped 11 of 15 shots, while Silverbacks netminder Noah Mavin turned aside 24 of 26.
The Silverbacks went two-for-six on the power play, while the Bucks finished zero-for-two.
Next, the Bucks open a homestand at Western Financial Place, facing the Okotoks Oilers on Friday, Sept. 25, and the Trail Smoke Eaters on Sept. 26.
