Fernie City Council has adopted amendments to the sewer connection and user fee bylaws, changing service connection fees from a percentage-based fee to a flat administration fee of $550 per service.
During its August 25 meeting, council gave first, second and third readings to amendments to the sewer connection and user fee bylaws. The amendments were formally adopted during Tuesday’s council meeting on September 8.
When a landowner or homeowner wishes to add a set of services to a residential lot, they use the process outlined in the Water Connection and User Charge Bylaw and the Sewer Connection and User Charge Bylaw.
This amendment is specific to the New Service Installation process only, where the previous Bylaw requires applicants to pay an initial $400 connection fee.
The City would then prepare a quote for the work required, which included a 15 per cent administration fee.
The 15 per cent administrative fee meant residents with higher-cost installations pay a higher administrative fee.
Administrative fees on service installations have averaged $1,222 per service and ranged between $580 and $2,029 over the last two years.
