The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) recognized Electoral Area B Volunteer of the Year Joanne Gareau at an event in Jaffray, celebrating her dedication and service.
“Joanne has made an extraordinary contribution to our community through her tireless volunteer service, and her impact can be felt in so many corners of Area B,” Stan Doehle, Electoral Area B Director, RDEK.
As president of the Galloway Curling Club, Gareau handles administration, record-keeping, promotion and volunteer coordination.
Under her leadership over the past three years, the club has completed several major upgrades, including replacing its 70-year-old ice plant, installing a new piping system and upgrading its septic system.
As a trained curling instructor, Gareau works with Jaffray School to introduce students to the sport, teach skills and build enthusiasm.
Gareau is also active with several community groups. She is a member of the Sand Creek Seniors Club, president of the group overseeing Pinewood Manor seniors housing, a supporter of the Sand Creek Lady Lions, and involved with the local Community Club and Social Planning Council, where she helps address issues including food insecurity.
“What stands out most about Joanne is not only the number of roles she has taken on, but the care, energy, and heart she brings to all of them. She is a huge part of the vibrancy, connection, and recreational success of Area B,” adds Doehle.
Gareau received a gift and was formally recognized at a Volunteer of the Year reception in Jaffray on Tuesday (Sept. 8).
