Monday’s (Sept. 7) pre-season matchup between the Bucks and Smoke Eaters had no shortage of penalties, goals and a fight, as Cranbrook lost 10-2 in Trail.
Trail opened the first period at Cominco Arena with four unanswered goals. Grayson Boe scored at 4:31, followed by Ivan Milovidov at 8:12, Brayden Tremblay at 12:38 and Alex Ostrovskyy at 13:31 to give the Smoke Eaters a 4-0 lead.
At 13:46, Bucks forward Matthew Gilmore and Smoke Eaters forward Ostrovskyy were each assessed unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Trail’s Connor Arko and Cranbrook’s Ty Ross also received offsetting penalties at the same time.
The scoring continued when Smoke Eaters forward Chase Nehring scored with 1:07 left in the first, extending Trail’s lead to 5-0. The goal came shortly after Nehring and Cranbrook forward Konnor Bissell fought and received five-minute majors at 19:02.
Bucks forward Lucas Husted-Edwards put Cranbrook on the board at 19:02, with assists from Shane Tronoski and Mykola Kosarev, as Trail ended the first period ahead 5-1.
Midway through the second period, Trail made a goaltending change, with Reed Russell replacing Kason Kobelka.
The Smoke Eaters added two quick goals, with Patrick McSharry scoring at 12:20 and Ostrovskyy netting his second of the game at 13:12 to make it 7-1.
Cranbrook then changed goaltenders, bringing Matteo Sinclair in for Noah Hagan.
Cranbrook responded quickly when forward James Larson scored at 13:52, cutting the deficit to 7-2.
More penalties followed at 16:36, when Trail’s Ben Albers was called for cross-checking and Bucks’ Husted-Edwards was assessed a roughing penalty.
In the third period, Cranbrook tried to close the gap, but Trail struck early when forward Dysen Drake beat the goaltender at 1:26. Smoke Eaters forward Brayden Rotach added another goal at 7:07.
The penalties continued when Trail forward Dysen Drake was called for boarding at 8:51, giving the Bucks a power play.
During the power play, Smoke Eaters forward Dylan Danyluk was awarded a penalty shot but could not capitalize, leaving the score 9-2.
With 1:54 left in the third, Bucks forward Chris Wright was called for tripping, giving Trail a late power play. Smoke Eaters forward Griffin Dewar scored to make it 10-2.
The Bucks return home for a rematch against the Smoke Eaters in their third pre-season game at Western Financial Place on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
