The Bear Warning for Floe Lake and Numa Pass has been expanded to cover the entire Rockwall Trail in Kootenay National Park.
A female grizzly bear and two cubs are frequenting the area and displaying bold behaviour.
Parks Canada is asking backpackers, hikers and trail runners to be bear aware and exercise additional caution.
The bears have been reported frequenting campgrounds along the trail, investigating the bear-proof food storage lockers, foraging for food, and persisting around groups of people.
Visitors should keep food and scented items in bear-proof storage lockers, keep pets on leash, and carry bear spray—and know how to use it.
If you encounter a bear, give it space. If the bear approaches, make noise, have bear spray and back away slowly. Do not drop food or run.
