Locals in a Cranbrook neighbourhood have asked the City for help with an “unfortunate” landscaping situation in Candy Cane Lane.
Fourteen residents on 25th Avenue South have signed a petition citing that less than a quarter of the bushes in the cul-de-sac’s island have been removed due to a “landscaping accident” last year.
As a result, residents are urging Council to pave the surface after clearing the remaining shrubs and roots from the center structure, which could cut down some maintenance costs for the City.
“The current state of the island is an eyesore and the roots that are left from the previous work on the site are a hazard,” read the petition.
Council has read the request for removal at the latest Special Council Meeting on Monday, August 10.
Councillor Mike Peabody has suggested the possibility of xeriscaping the island with decorative rocks or gravel instead of repaving it entirely.
Councillor Lynette Wray concurred, saying a similar situation had occurred in Anderson Crescent a number of years ago.
“I always appreciate the option of xeriscaping, but I think it can still result in the need for weeding because it breaks through the landscaping fabric and those kind of things,” said Wray.
“But this is not the first time one of these have had to be removed just because they’re tough to maintain.”
Council has agreed to refer the motion to staff and consult the neighbourhood to see whether they’d want to help pay for or set up decorations instead.
