The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is expected to decide Friday (August 14) on time observance in southeastern B.C., following a public survey that invited residents to share their views.
More than 14,000 participated and showed a strong majority of 89 per cent of respondents would like to stop the semi-annual time changes and stay on a single time all year.
Further, 66 per cent of respondents indicated a preference for Mountain Daylight Saving Time.
“I am pleased to see such strong participation in the survey as we know this is an issue that people are passionate about,” says Rob Gay, Board Chair, RDEK.
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to participate and look forward to the Board’s discussion at our meeting next week.”
Once a decision is made by the RDEK Board, it will be shared with the participating local governments within the RDEK.
It will also be shared with Golden and CSRD (Area A) as they will need to establish their time observance independently.
The Province will be notified of the decision and requested to undertake any implementation that may be required.
The meetings will be livestreamed via Zoom, and the Time Zone Observance will be discussed at the Governance and Regional Services Meeting on Thursday (August 13) at 2:45 p.m. with the final discussion and decision to be made at the Board Meeting on Friday (August 14) starting at 9 a.m.
