Drilling is set to begin today (August 5) on Elkview Crescent as The City of Fernie investigates groundwater movement in the area.
Several residents on Elkview Crescent have been experiencing challenges with groundwater in their basements for many years.
The City has engaged a hydrogeological consultant (ISL Engineering) to investigate the likely cause of groundwater influx into basements and potential mitigation options.
The scope of this study includes the following:
- Background information review and desktop study (ongoing)
- Drilling of groundwater monitoring wells in the study area (August 5, 2026)
- Data analysis and reporting (2027)
The drilling program will include four drill holes located on City property around Elkview Crescent, at the locations shown below.

Instrumentation will be installed in each drill hole for continuous groundwater level monitoring. This data will be tracked for a minimum of one year to identify seasonal fluctuations in groundwater levels.
After one year, the City consultant will prepare reports summarizing their findings. Both a technical report and a resident information package will be publicly available.
