A Cranbrook woman is among 13 people receiving the Medal of Good Citizenship for their exceptional commitment to strengthening their communities.
This recognition celebrates individuals, groups and organizations who have made lasting contributions to their local communities.
“British Columbia is a better place because of people who dedicate their time and talents to improving the lives of those around them,” said Premier David Eby.
“This year’s recipients have devoted their energy, skills and compassion to enriching the places where they live.
“Through their leadership, volunteerism and service, they have helped build a stronger, more caring and connected province.”
Joanne Weatherall of Cranbrook is recognized for decades of dedicated volunteer service supporting youth, heritage and community life.
For more than 25 years, she has been an active Scouts Canada leader, working with youth across B.C.
She organizes weekly programs, camps and special events, including Beaver Buggies and Cub Cars, Hands Across the Border and jamborees.
After her teaching career, Joanne expanded her volunteer work through the Cranbrook History Centre, helping organize the annual heritage fair for elementary and secondary students.
Her service also includes supporting the local dog club show in various roles and hosting visiting musicians with the Symphony of the Kootenays. She volunteers with other local organizations, including the Cranbrook Garden Club and Rotary Club of Cranbrook Sunrise for the Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo.
“Strong communities are built by people who step up, lend a hand and inspire those around them,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, and chair of the Medal of Good Citizenship selection committee.
“The Medal of Good Citizenship shines a light on these extraordinary individuals whose compassion, generosity and dedication to others have uplifted those in need, making a lasting difference in peoples’ lives.”
An independent selection committee reviews all nominations and recommends recipients for the medal.
Medal presentation ceremonies will be held in the coming months.
