The Terry Fox Run is back in Fernie this September, and community members are encouraged to sign up now to honour his memory and raise funds for cancer research.
The non-competitive fundraising event is held every year across the nation to raise money for cancer research.
On September 20, Elk Valley residents and visitors are invited to join no matter your age or athletic level.
You can form teams with your friends, family or colleagues and participate in the two kilometer or five-kilometer races, starting at Annex Park Pavilion.
Local businesses, organizations and residents are also encouraged to help with registering, fundraising and volunteering.
Terry Fox was a Port Coquitlam athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. At 21, after losing a leg to osteosarcoma, he launched the Marathon of Hope in 1980.
He set out to run across Canada on a prosthetic leg, raising money and awareness for cancer research.
Fox ran nearly a marathon a day, passing through communities across Canada until cancer spread to his lungs.
The first Terry Fox Run took place in 1981. More than 40 years later, communities in Canada and around the world still hold annual events in his honour.
