The City of Fernie is now ready to break ground on its new fire hall after completing the final design and contracting for the “urgently needed” facility.
This update, though, comes pending a Supreme Court decision on a local group’s plea to protect Servello Field from development, which the City says must be resolved before construction can start.
“All preparatory work required to advance the project has been completed,” said the City. “This includes coordination with minor and adult ball and other Prentice Park user groups.”
Its final fixed-price contract comes in at just over $15 million of its $16 million budget, leaving enough funds for contingency and planned ball diamond upgrades at James White Park.
If courts rule in favour of the development, the project is on track to mobilize and prepare the site this month, with the 15,919-square-foot building set to be operational by August 2027.
