City staff are looking to improve standards across some campgrounds in Cranbrook.
Council has given a campground bylaw three readings to regulate all new and upgrading campgrounds, covering services such as fire protection, traffic management, washroom facilities and more.
“You can’t, you shouldn’t, have a campground without a washroom or the proper garbage facilities. These are basic minimal standards,” said Curtis Penson, manager of engineering and field services with the City. “We don’t have those standards now.”
Along with increased standards, the bylaw also sets application fees for $1,500, plus $100 per camping space, to cover staff time and application processing costs.
Staff are also asking council to include campground spaces in the Development Cost Charge bylaw to ensure developers “pay their fair share” for impacts on local infrastructure.
If approved, campground developers would have to pay DCCs equivalent to those for a high-density residential, which were $6,470 per unit in September 2025.
The change would not affect existing campgrounds.
