The Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) rural fire services are reminding residents to take precautions when conducting spring burning, following several recent fires in the region.
The RDEK says the warning comes after three separate incidents in the past 24 hours.
Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Drew Sinclair says crews from the Edgewater Fire Department responded to a grass fire that spread quickly due to strong winds.
The fire was contained, but Sinclair says it could have become much more serious.
A separate fire in the Brisco area also spread out of control on private property.
The RDEK says that because the location fell outside a fire protection service area, the RCMP responded, and the BC Wildfire Service was notified.
On Tuesday morning (Mar. 31), firefighters from Jaffray and Baynes Lake responded to another grass fire in the Baynes Lake area.
Officials say residents should ensure they have proper equipment on hand before burning, including tools and a reliable water source.
They are also urging residents to check weather conditions, avoid burning during windy periods, and remain on site until fires are fully extinguished.
The RDEK says the region is entering what is known as the “spring dip,” when snow has melted, but new vegetation has not yet grown.
During this period, dry ground fuels can ignite easily and allow fires to spread quickly.
Fire officials say careful planning and prevention are essential, noting that fires can become unpredictable if conditions change.
