The City of Fernie says its wastewater system is stabilizing following heavy rainfall.
The emergency bypass at the Main Sewage Lift Station was closed Sunday (Mar. 22) afternoon.
City officials say bypasses are only used as a last resort to prevent backups into homes and protect infrastructure.
They added that high flows forced the city to discharge partially treated wastewater from the Rapid Infiltration Basins into the Elk River to prevent overtopping and potential failure of lagoon berms.
Discharges will stop once treatment pond levels stabilize.
Officials thanked residents and businesses for reducing water use.
