After heavy rainfall across the East Kootenay, several municipalities are proceeding with caution.
According to a City of Fernie release issued Saturday (Mar. 21), wastewater levels have remained high even after a break in the rain.
Untreated effluent is being diverted into the Elk River to protect infrastructure.
Officials say the bypass will close once flows return to normal.
City crews continue working to manage drainage and wastewater, while residents are being asked to limit non-essential water use.
In Area A, the Regional District of East Kootenay says heavy rain has caused sediment and debris buildup where Hosmer Creek and Mine Creek meet.
The RDEK says it has received approval for limited in-water work to reduce flood risk, with work expected to begin Monday (Mar. 23).
A high streamflow advisory for the East Kootenay has ended, but officials warn more rain is expected this week, and caution is still needed around rivers and creeks.
Sandbag stations are set up in Fernie, Hosmer, Sparwood, Fairmont and Kimberley as a precaution.
