Cranbrook has updated its permissive tax exemption application process, including a new May 31 deadline.
The city says that permissive tax exemptions aim to support nonprofit organizations that provide services in the community.
Several key changes include:
• The application deadline has moved to May 31 (previously August 31), and late applications will no longer be accepted. Beginning with the 2028 taxation year, permissive tax exemption bylaws will shift from a one-year term to a four-year term, with applications due by May 31, 2027, and an annual declaration required.
• Organizations that are not delivering their primary service for the full year may receive a reduced exemption, based on the number of months they are actively providing services to the public.
Non-profits are being encouraged to review the updated policy and prepare for the new May 31 application deadline.
