The City of Cranbrook is looking to take a weight off the backs of road workers with an upcoming seasonal load restriction on local roads.
On Friday, March 13, streets will be limited to 70 per cent legal axle loading, with some streets reduced to 50 per cent depending on conditions.
“When frost leaves the ground, the soil under the road becomes saturated and weaker,” explained the City. “Heavy vehicles travelling on these roads can quickly cause damage and create unsafe driving conditions.”
Several main routes will continue to allow 100 per cent legal axle loading from 17 Street South to the area of Victor Road and Highway 95A.
Applications for oversize permits can be submitted to the City for loads that won’t be going to industrial use during the restriction period.
The City is working with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to align its restrictions with operations outside City limits. Road users can sign up for email updates on those limits through the Ministry.
