Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a weather warning for Kootenay Pass along Highway 3.
An intense winter storm is forecast to affect the area from Tuesday (Dec. 16) until Wednesday morning (Dec. 17), with snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 cm expected.
The agency is warning of blowing snow and near-zero visibility as an intense Pacific frontal system moves into the B.C. Interior, intensifying Tuesday evening.
ECCC warns that travel may be hazardous.
Visibility could be suddenly reduced to near zero at times, and mountain weather can change rapidly, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, adjust to winter driving conditions, and use winter tires and chains.
