The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has released its investigation report into the forced landing of an aircraft south of Cranbrook in August of 2022.
The plane, equipped with pontoons, was part of wildland firefighting efforts near Connell Ridge when it ran into trouble.
Indications are it lost power to the engine.
The pilot’s quick actions, and some mitigating factors, resulted in reducing any injuries, including a flight helmet and slow impact speed.
The plane came down about 200 metres from the wildfire’s boundary.
The plane was about 350 feet above the ground; the TSB acknowledging that it left insufficient time for the pilot to complete the checklist, determine the cause, and attempt to restore power.
They’re crediting the pilot’s decision-making experience and training for preventing any serious injury or death.
The plane was an Air Tractor AT-802A owned by Conair Aviation.
