A ground breaking ceremony was held last month for the Seven Nations Soaring Eagle Healing Centre, an Indigenous led alcohol and drug treatment centre in Creston.
Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie says the centre is a successor to the former Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treatment Centre.
“We’ve got the treatment centre back to it’s rightful location at the Lower Kootenay Band,” says Louie. “I do need to mention, the one who had the vision of this many years ago was the late Mary Basil who founded what was the Ktunaxa Kinbasket Treatment Centre. This is also in honor of her vision of a better life for Indigenous people.”
Louie says the facility will provide cultural treatments like holistic healing and contemporary practices like the 12-step program.
“I do want to underscore that the 12-step program is not going to be the sole focus,” he says. “We are utilizing what we have with our traditional teachings, with elders and mentorship from spiritual leaders to get on that better path in life.”
Construction will cost around $9.5-million and is expected to be completed in 2023.
