A current member of Cranbrook City Council will not be seeking re-election .
John Hudak will not be running for a second term in the 2022 Municipal Election citing a recent heart attack and a desire to spend more time with his family.
He listed several highlights from his short time in office, including the sale of the former Tembec lands.
“Certainly the hiring of the new CAO,” says Hudak. “Probably some of the other things in regards to some of the Development that is taking place with outside developers recognizing Cranbrook and the potential here for them to invest in our community.”
He is encouraging his successor on council to approach things with an open mind and don’t expect things to happen in a hurry.
“There are courses available,” Hudak says. “And rely on the returning council members, as well as don’t hesitate to reach out to former members of council also because sometimes they’ve got some real good tips. Saves you from walking into some minefields.”
Hudak joined council in May of 2019 in a surprise by-election.
View a statement from Hudak below:
As an incumbent councillor, with municipal elections slated for mid-October, the time has arrived to announce my Council intentions.
I have taken my councillor duties seriously while serving the residents of Cranbrook and considered it an honour to do so.
I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve as a councillor and have tried my best with honesty and integrity.
With the input and sup-port of residents I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve and considered “no call too small”, as a cornerstone for my service.
To continue for the next four years , I consulted with family and friends and evaluated things in my life, as I approach another birth milestone.
The fact I have a daughter, son-in-law and grand-daughter nearby is something I treasure .
My son, daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren live in Ontario, thereby limiting the frequency of visits. During my time in the RCMP I placed my duties ahead of my family.
That was a mistake which I do not care to repeat!
I hope to have more family time and less “John time” in my future, as I enjoy my senior years.
As some of you are aware, I had a recent health event a couple of weeks ago when I had a heart attack at home.
I am lucky to be alive and received triple bypass surgery to rectify the nine block-ages.
I feel I have reclaimed ten years of my life. With this opportunity for a “do over” , I have decided not to seek re-election in 2022.
The opportunity to serve with my colleagues on Council has been rewarding and enriching and it was a pleasure to serve with them, even when we did not always agree but that’s democracy in action!
We are very fortunate to have this system of governance.
I am excited to see what the next Council will bring as I believe we are in exciting times for Cranbrook.
Thanks for the opportunity and memories, it was a pleasure to serve as one of your city councillors.
-John Hudak, Cranbrook City Council
