Snowpacks in the East Kootenay and Columbia Valley are still high, creating a risk of flooding going into June.
The BC River Forecast Centre released their latest snow basin index this week, covering data up to June 1st.
The measurements show the East Kootenay region is currently at 166 percent of normal, above the 115 percent reported at the beginning of May.
The Upper Columbia region is also well above the normal, reporting a 165 percent rate, compared to 121 percent on May 1st. That’s a record high for the Upper Columbia region.
The BC River Forecast Centre warns that all regions of the province with snow measurements greater than 140 percent of normal have significant risk from snowmelt related flooding.
They consider both the Upper Columbia and the Kootenays as regions that remain at relatively high risk due to snow pack.
The next updated seasonal flood risk forecast from the BC River Forecast Centre is expected to be released on June 17th.
