College of the Rockies wants to help kids take their learning to new heights in the summer.
The Cranbrook and Fernie campuses are hosting day camps in July to teach science, technology, engineering, arts and math, aka: STEAM for kids aged 6 – 12.
COTR’s Paul Tiege says the camps exist to fill a need for parents who don’t want their kids education stopping entirely during the summer.
“This Summer parents might want their kids to be a bit more connected to education and learning and be able to involve themselves in some educational activities rather then just hanging out at the mall all day,” Tiege says. “I think it’s a way for us to interact with the community and offer this connection as well”.
Tiege says the Spring break camps were a learning experience that helped the organizers better prepare for the summer.
“We’re going to have a slightly better camp ratios, and we’ve lowered the camp costs as well,” he says. “We heard from parents that the costs were a little unaffordable, and so this time around we’ve lowered them, and we’ve also got a subsidy available for families that may need it as well. We want this experience to be really available for any kid that wants to learn and come out and play with us.”

Cranbrook children between the ages of 6 and 12, and Fernie kids aged 9 to 12, can have fun taking their learning to new heights with College of the Rockies hands-on STEAM Camps.
“After successfully offering Spring Break STEM Camps, we are looking forward to new camps this summer, including a camp designed specifically for budding artists,” said Paul Tiege, Manager, Applied Research and Innovation. “We’re excited to also be able to offer a Camp in Fernie for the first time.”
Cranbrook Camps will run as follows:
- July 11 to 15: Mad Scientist, The Art Factory, or Outdoor Education and Adventure Fun Camps
- July 18 to 22: Inside, Outside, Upside Down Games; Mad Scientist, or The Art Factory Camps
- July 25 to 29: Creative Maker, STEAM Sample Electric Piano, and Outdoor Education and Adventure Fun
The Fernie campus’ STEAM Sampler LED Clock Camp will run from July 18 to 22 and provide participants with the opportunity to build their very own LED Clock.
“Though each Camp has a STEAM-related focus, these Camps will be so packed with fun, the participants won’t even know they are learning,” Tiege said.
