The Mayor of Elkford is proud of the accomplishments of District Council as he gets set to leave public office.
Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher announced earlier this month that after 20 years, he would be retiring from local and regional politics.
McKerracher has played a large role in politics and public service throughout the East Kootenay, being a part of Elkford District Council for 19 years and Chair of the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District for seven consecutive terms.
He has also served as a Credit Union Director for 13 years and has done extensive work with the BC Curling Association and local Lions Club.
McKerracher is proud of the numerous developments he’s helped move forward in the development of Elkford, including debt reduction and strengthening infrastructure.
“The first year I was in, we paid our $15 million debt, that for many, many years we had to pay,” McKerracher says. “The second year in was the first we were debt free and we ran a long time without any debt. Started buying our own fire trucks, we were renting them and so we were buying our own equipment.”
Another accomplishment Dean is proud of is the effort Elk Valley mayors have put into developing the region over the past two decades.
“I really felt that we pulled the valley together as one. We stood together on the Mine Tax Agreement and stood solid and that’s really helped our communities tremendously,” McKerracher says.
McKerracher is one of Elkford’s earliest residents and going into retirement, he looks forward to enjoying his time in the community with his family.
