Outdoor recreation is getting a major investment throughout the Columbia Basin.
Columbia Basin Trust recently announced they would be investing nearly $1.47 million into 18 outdoor recreation facilities throughout the wider region.
Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits Will Nixon says the facilities will provide new outdoor opportunities in communities like Golden, Kimberley and Elkford.
“One of the Trust’s strategic priorities is community well-being,” Nixon says. “These projects support community efforts to create low-barrier outdoor recreation facilities that encourage all residents to live more active and healthy lifestyles. That’s something that residents have told us for some time that they want.”
Nixon says $99,000 would help develop a new Adventure Playground on Kimberley’s Swan Avenue.
“This is going to see the development of an inclusive and accessible adventure park. There’s going to be really great things like a zip line, climbing structures,” Nixon says. “There’s going to be a gazebo there for families to watch the kids play and watch the adults play and there’s going to be more things coming into that park as well. So its just a great project that we’ve been watching for some time and we are happy to be involved.”
A total of $325,000 is also being invested into projects in Elkford, including $250,000 for the Elkford Bike and Skills Park and $75,000 for the district’s tennis courts.
