Cranbrook City Council continues to work to address housing issues in the Key City.
At Monday night’s meeting, city council adopted an amendment to the Official Community Plan to allow development of a new 75-unit, multiple family residential building at 1001 10th Street North.
Councilor Wayne Price says there is definitely still a strong need for new housing projects in Cranbrook.
“I think if you look at the studies that have been done, the housing study, the need is definitely there,” Price says. “I really don’t think that the building should interfere with with aesthetics of the neighbourhood.”
He says the new units will be perfect for young professionals and seniors.
“Until we start getting these types of developments in Cranbrook our rent is going to be high in these lower end apartments.” he says. “Once the price is leveled out, those lower end units are going to drop in price and thereby we are going to achieve some form of more affordable housing. It’s really hard to argue with the development.”
The building will be 5 storeys, with single and multiple bedroom apartments and studios.
