A crackdown by RCMP highway patrol has netted nine drunk drivers south of Moyie.
The two-day operation was carried out on October 23 and 24 on Highways 3 and 95 near Yahk.
In all, 44 charges were laid including those for a repeat offender, a prohibited driver and two drivers going more than 40 km/h over the speed limit.
Eight vehicles were also impounded for between 3 and 30 days.
The operation was part of a larger collaborative effort involving multiple partners, with BC Highway Patrol Cranbrook and Nelson focusing on criminal interdiction and road safety.
In a news release, Sergeant Brett Reiben with BCHP Cranbrook said, “Working alongside our partners allowed for a strong and visible enforcement on our highways. Removing nine impaired drivers from our highways is a significant result. Every impaired driver we remove represents a potential tragedy prevented.”
Officers also seized contraband tobacco.
RCMP said drivers can expect initiatives will continue to be conducted throughout the Kootenay region.
