Creston RCMP are warning residents and businesses about a rise in reported fuel thefts across the Creston Valley.
Police say gasoline and diesel have been stolen from vehicles in several recent incidents, particularly from work trucks. Thieves have also targeted auxiliary fuel storage tanks, commonly called tidy tanks.
“Fuel theft can have a significant financial impact on residents, businesses, contractors, and farmers who rely on their vehicles and equipment every day,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, Media Relations Officer, BC RCMP.
“While officers continue to investigate these incidents, we encourage vehicle owners to take steps to reduce opportunities for thieves.”
Police recommend the following steps to help prevent fuel theft:
- Park vehicles in locked compounds, garages or secure areas whenever possible
- Park in well-lit locations
- Use security cameras or motion-activated lighting
- Use locking fuel caps and other anti-theft devices
- Check vehicles and fuel tanks regularly for signs of tampering
- Report suspicious activity to police immediately
Anyone who sees suspicious activity around parked vehicles, equipment, fuel tanks or work sites is asked to contact their local police.
