Orientation week is underway in Cranbrook, as the City’s incoming mayor and council begin preparing for their new roles today (Oct. 26).
This week, council members will take part in a mandatory, week-long orientation covering their roles, responsibilities and duties, as well as the work of each city department.
Sessions will include governance, parliamentary procedure, planning, public hearings, municipal finance, boards and committees.
Council members will also visit Cranbrook neighbourhoods to review sites expected to come before them during their term.
They will also take the oath of office this week.
“I am very excited to meet the team, and to begin the important work of learning and working together,” says Mayor-elect Tom Shypitka.
“For anyone that has not been involved in governance before, the learning curve is steep. Together, we will grow to best serve the residents of Cranbrook.”
The new council includes Mayor-elect Tom Shypitka, and councillor-elects Shaun Penner, Joe McGowan, Robin Goldsbury, Bruce Murdoch, current Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Price and Ron Miles.
The new council’s inaugural regular meeting is set for Nov. 2.
