A new roundabout at Kimberley Avenue, Ross Street and Spokane Street is open to traffic, marking a milestone in the Kimberley Avenue Infrastructure Project.
The project primarily replaced and upgraded aging water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure beneath Kimberley Avenue.
After the underground work was completed, the roadway was rebuilt and the intersection was redesigned.
The roundabout accounted for a relatively small portion of the overall project compared with the underground infrastructure and road reconstruction.
The intersection features a mini-roundabout, which is smaller than a conventional roundabout. Larger and oversized vehicles can travel over the centre island when necessary, while passenger vehicles travel around it.
The smaller design is also intended to reduce speeds and encourage cautious movement through the intersection.
Above-ground improvements were also made to provide a safer, more accessible connection for pedestrians.
The project includes active transportation features such as a designated bike lane for people walking, cycling and using other forms of active transportation.
Drivers are advised to slow down when approaching the intersection, enter the roundabout when it is safe and proceed carefully.
Officials noted that motorists may need time to adjust to the new traffic pattern.
The roundabout was designed to accommodate winter maintenance. City crews are trained to clear the roadway, including the full travelled portion of the intersection.
The City thanked residents, businesses and visitors for their patience during construction and urged drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to use extra caution while becoming familiar with the intersection.
