A proposed amendment to Cranbrook’s Official Community Plan addressing food security will go to a public hearing.
City Council directed staff in 2023 to make food security a priority. The city later received a $15,000 Plan H BC Healthy Communities Grant to develop a Community Food Charter and guide long-term efforts toward a more food-secure Cranbrook.
The charter outlines a shared vision, values and priorities for Cranbrook’s food system.
It addresses growing food insecurity, limited access, low awareness and a lack of coordination among organizations, while identifying community-driven goals and actions.
More than 25 people from a range of organizations, age groups, financial backgrounds, abilities and neighbourhoods helped develop the charter.
The city held in-person, hybrid and virtual meetings and offered supports including childcare funding and transit fare to reduce barriers to participation.
The public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 23 at 6 p.m.
