The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is encouraging residents to FireSmart their properties this fall, with the season providing a good opportunity to clear vegetation and reduce wildfire risks around their homes.
RDEK says taking a few simple steps can reduce wildfire risk and help protect your home.
Simple steps to FireSmart your property
- clear leaves, needles, and other debris from roofs, gutters, and decks
- move firewood and combustible materials away from your home
- keep grass and vegetation trimmed.
Small actions taken now can make a meaningful difference next wildfire season.

Upcoming Events:
A chipping event for Columere Park on October 20.
This event is intended to give residents the opportunity to prune coniferous trees on their property as well as dispose of dead and downed branches that may act as fuel during a wildfire. Residents can leave materials out from October 6, for chipping on October 20.
A Community Debris Bin Event for residents of Mayook, starting on October 17.
The goal of this event is to give residents a convenient place to dispose of yard waste like dead and downed branches, needles, leaves, and pine cones that may act as a source of ignition during a wildfire. The bin will be available for use from Oct. 17 – 24. It will be located at the Old Schoolhouse.
