The Fernie Ghostriders edged the Kimberley Dynamiters 2-1 at home Saturday night, Sept. 5, in a penalty-filled game at Fernie Memorial Arena.
The first period opened with two early penalties: Fernie’s Owen MacLeod was called for interference at 8:14, and Kimberley’s Cohen Bell was assessed a cross-checking penalty at 9:15.
A fight broke out at 13:29 of the first period. Kimberley’s Xavier Barrett received a five-minute major for fighting and a 10-minute game misconduct, while Parker Johnston was assessed a 10-minute misconduct.
Fernie’s Ty Davis received a 10-minute misconduct, Alex Halat was assessed a 10-minute game misconduct and a five-minute major for fighting, and Rayne Jones was called for a two-minute hit-to-the-head penalty, giving Kimberley a power play.
Kimberley defenceman Avery Lynch scored with 4:48 left in the first period.
With 4:10 remaining in the first, Fernie’s Jaxon Droiser was given a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Early in the second period, Ghostriders forward Jonas Rousselle scored 4:15 into the frame to tie the game 1-1.
Misconduct penalties followed at 10:24 of the second, with Kimberley’s Cohen Bell and Fernie’s Stephen Jones each receiving 10-minute misconducts.
With 8:04 left in the second, Ghostriders forward Gavin Harty beat the netminder to give Fernie a 2-1 lead.
Both teams were penalized again in the 14th minute, with Kimberley’s Mason Noble called for high-sticking and Fernie’s Domenic Rattai called for hooking.
The third period brought another early penalty, as Kimberley’s Cohen Bell was called for slashing at 4:11.
Nearly two minutes later, roughing penalties were called against Fernie’s Koa Percival, served by Ethan Watkins, and Kimberley’s Kye Taggart. Percival also received an additional hit-to-the-head penalty.
Both teams returned to the penalty box later in the period, with Fernie’s Ethan Watkins called for tripping at 12:45 and Kimberley’s Jacob Rogers called for slashing at 15:13. Neither team capitalized on the ensuing power plays.
Kimberley closed the game with two more penalties, as Parker Johnston was called for cross-checking and Kye Taggart for boarding.
Ghostriders goaltender Owen Gallant stopped 28 of 29 shots, while Dynamiters goalie Sam Lai made 27 saves on 29 shots.
There were 612 people in attendance at Saturday’s (September 5) game.
