Cranbrook council has approved the 2026 Transit Future Service Plan, which proposes frequent route services and an on-demand service across the city.
On Monday night (July 27), Council adopted the 2026 Cranbrook Transit Future Service Plan Conventional Service and the 2026 Cranbrook Transit Future Service Plan Custom Transit Service.
Cranbrook’s conventional transit system has had only a few changes since it launched in 2000.
After ridership declined between 2011 and 2018 and was affected by the pandemic, the City began exploring how riders use the transit system.
A 2021 study found that a mix of fixed-route and on-demand transit would work best for Cranbrook.
This approach helps provide stronger service in busier areas while still offering coverage in parts of the city where fewer people ride transit.
The 2026 Cranbrook Transit Future Service Plan proposes a simpler system with a higher-frequency main route connecting major destinations, a school-focused route during peak travel times, and OnDemand service across the city.
The plan would use the same number of buses and service hours as the current system, while making transit easier to understand and more convenient for riders.
City staff will work with BC Transit to implement the Transit Future Service Plan’s service-hour-neutral network redesign, targeting service launch in summer 2027.
