Premier David Eby has issued a statement recognizing the start of Pride season across British Columbia, emphasizing the importance of celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and standing against discrimination.
“It’s a time to bolster and support those who continue to fight for dignity, safety and human rights,” Eby stated.
Eby encouraged all British Columbians to learn about the history of the queer and trans communities in Canada.
“From the 1971 gay-liberation protests in Vancouver and Ottawa, to the 2005 legalization of same-sex marriage in Canada.”
“At a time when queer and trans communities are facing growing challenges and harmful policies in some parts of Canada and beyond, Pride is an affirmation that those spreading hate and discrimination have no place in British Columbia.”
Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity Jennifer Blatherwick also acknowledged the start of Pride season, highlighting the importance of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities being able to live their lives safely.
“Pride season is a powerful reminder that across B.C., two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people deserve to live, love and thrive without fear,” said Blatherwick.
“It is a time to honour and embrace all people for who they are, especially those whose courage has shaped our province, and to recognize the vibrant communities that continue to enrich our shared life.”
Pride events will be held across the province throughout the summer, including East Kootenay.
