The City of Cranbrook has announced a review of the proposed road improvement plans for Victoria Avenue.
In late April, potential turning lane safety improvements for Victoria Avenue were announced, including reinforcing existing painted left-hand turn restrictions by installing concrete dividers.
Left-hand turns into and out of Victoria Avenue around A&W, Domino’s, the car wash, and the Co-op are illegal; some motorists are still using these accesses.
The proposed change to concrete barriers to physically restrict these turns is of significant concern to some business owners and operators.
The city is responding by deferring this specific change and conducting a focused review with a second engineering firm to explore all options for business access.
City staff will consult with these businesses on the feasibility of these options, then determine costs.
This review, consultation and costing work will be completed before changes are made at this location.
New concrete medians are still planned at 12th Street North, 8th Street North, and 4th Street North intersections with Victoria Avenue, guiding traffic to right-in, right-out movements only later this summer.
