Columbia Valley police responded to a handful of fraud and theft cases last week, according to the detachment’s latest round-up.
RCMP say officers responded to 59 calls for service between May 19 and May 25.
The week kicked off with a report of up to $4,000 worth of fuel being stolen from various pieces of machinery at a construction site near Radium Hot Springs on Tuesday, May 19.
Police then noticed an increase in online scams that ask victims to invest in crypto or try to access large sums of money, both of which lead to huge financial losses.
“If it seems too good to be true, it likely is,” said the RCMP. “Take time to verify before sending money.”
Signs include urgent cash requests, suspicious links or messages, unsolicited contact from “official” sources, and payment requests via e-transfer, crypto or gift cards.
Officers have also found one Trek 19.5” 21-speed mountain bike along Highway 95, near Spur Valley, as well as two children’s mountain bikes – a Raleigh Cliffhanger and a TrailXC 3.0 – in Athalmer, around the bridge, that week.
Anyone with information regarding the theft, the recovered bikes, or suspicious online activity is asked to call Columbia Valley RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-342-9292.
