The representative for the Kootenay-Rockies is back and has finally been able to share his voice at the Legislature after suffering a stroke just before New Year’s.
MLA Pete Davis took medical leave on December 30 and was expected to return by the start of the spring legislative session in February, but it wasn’t until Wednesday (May 6) that he was finally able to detail his experience to other House members by video.
“In a matter of minutes, everything changed,” he said.
“The stroke took my ability to walk, it took my use of my right hand and my right arm, and blurred my vision for almost five months. One moment, life felt normal. The next, it was completely turned upside down.”
Party members wore blue “Team Pete” shirts in solidarity.
Davis also commended the team at STARS air ambulance and shared his support for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, adding that he plans to create a support group for stroke survivors in his riding after his experience.
“Recovery is hard, it’s humbling, and it changes you. I’m not the same person I was in December, but I’m here and for that I’m very, very thankful.”
He has yet to give an exact date for his in-person return to Victoria, but he is “almost ready”.
