Investigators in southeastern British Columbia are asking for the public’s help as they work to piece together what happened to Christopher Newton, who was last seen in late 2023 and whose remains were discovered more than a year later near Nelson.
Police say Newton, a 33-year-old Indigenous man, was last confirmed to be in the 2-Mile area near Nelson on Dec. 24, 2023.
The case was taken over by the RCMP Southeast District General Investigation Section on March 17, 2026, as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding his death.
“There remain many unanswered questions about what happened to Christopher,” said Meghan Foster, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the unit.
Investigators say they are working to establish a clearer timeline and are asking to speak with anyone who may have seen Newton or had contact with him between Dec. 24, 2023, and June 4, 2025 — the date police were alerted to human remains in the Nelson North Shore 2-Mile area.
His mother, Christine Moore, is urging anyone with information to come forward.
“As Christopher’s mother, I live every day with the heartbreak of missing my son and still not knowing the full truth of what happened to him,” she said in a release.
“We believe someone knows more than they have said, and even the smallest piece of information could help bring us closer to answers.”
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Southeast District General Investigation Section at 250-470-6222, quoting file number 2026-856.
