Families in Cranbrook can get a close look at western painted turtle hatchlings on Earth Day.
Turtle Day is scheduled for Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Elizabeth Lake.
The free event is set to feature newly emerged hatchlings, along with educational displays about the species and local conservation efforts.
The event is hosted by the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program and the Rocky Mountain Naturalists.
Organizers say protecting nesting areas at Elizabeth Lake is key to helping the vulnerable turtle population survive, as threats like habitat loss and road traffic continue to impact the species.
Parking will be available off Wattsville Road near the ballpark, and attendees are asked to leave dogs at home.
