Invermere Fire Rescue says a balcony fire on Monday (Apr. 6) morning was likely caused by a discarded cigarette.
In a statement, the department said crews were called at 7:23 a.m. to the 300 block of 10th Avenue after reports of flames and black smoke coming from an apartment balcony.
Twelve firefighters and four apparatus responded.
Upon arrival, crews extinguished the fire, which began in a flower planter and had spread to nearby decking.
The department said its investigation determined the fire was likely caused by a cigarette discarded in the planter the previous evening.
Invermere Fire Rescue thanked the resident who responded promptly and the person who reported the fire, noting their actions allowed for a quick response.
The department is reminding the public that personal safety should come first in a fire and advises calling emergency services rather than attempting to extinguish it.
It also says cigarettes should be disposed of in proper ashtrays or metal containers with sand.
