Two prescribed burn projects in Cranbrook have received $190,000 in funding through the Columbia Basin Wildfire Resilience Initiative, a program delivered by the Trust in partnership with the Province of British Columbia.
The projects include planned burns at the Canadian Rockies International Airport and within the community watershed area in Phillips North near Gold Creek.
According to the City of Cranbrook, the burns are based on wildfire risk assessments and include input from fire agencies, Indigenous partners, and community feedback.
The work is intended to reduce wildfire risk by clearing vegetation in areas identified as high risk for fires.
Officials say reducing fuel in these areas may help limit wildfire spread and reduce impacts on infrastructure such as the airport and key transportation routes.
Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services Chief Scott Driver said the projects are part of ongoing efforts to address wildfire risk in areas that have previously experienced higher threat levels.
The prescribed burns are expected to take place as early as this fall, depending on weather and site conditions.
